Our History

1875 - Foundation

The Royal Art Institute was founded by a group of prominent artists and patrons with the goal of promoting artistic excellence and providing education in the fine arts. The Institute began in a small building in the heart of the city.

1902 - Expansion

After significant growth in both membership and reputation, the Institute moved to its current historic building, designed by renowned architect James Wilson. The new space allowed for expanded galleries, studios, and educational facilities.

1945 - Post-War Renaissance

Following World War II, the Institute underwent a renaissance, embracing modern art movements and expanding its collection to include works from diverse cultural backgrounds. This period marked a significant shift in the Institute's approach to art and education.

1978 - Centennial Celebration

The Institute's centennial was marked by the establishment of the Annual Excellence in Art Competition, which has since become one of the most prestigious art competitions globally, attracting entries from artists around the world.

2005 - Digital Age

Embracing the digital revolution, the Institute launched its Digital Arts Program, providing resources and education in digital media and expanding its collection to include digital and new media artworks.

Today

Today, the Royal Art Institute stands as a leading cultural institution, continuing its mission to promote artistic excellence while adapting to the evolving landscape of contemporary art. With a focus on inclusivity and innovation, the Institute remains committed to supporting artists and engaging diverse audiences.
